Basque culture beyond the border

the true essence of the Basqueness

Snuggled between the Bay of Biscay and the rugged foothills of the Pyrenees, this tiny region fascinates with its lush hills and valleys dotted with charismatic white-and-red villages, but also with its proudly preserved basque culture. Proud, independent and fiery, the people of the Basque Country are fiercely protective of their history and culture, which is hardly surprising, since it's been an independent nation for much of its history and the area has more in common with the nearby Basque regions of Spain than with the rest of France itself.

Itinerary

St-Jean Pied de Port

At the foot of the Pyrenees, the town of St-Jean Pied de Port is a popular start for pilgrims of the St James Way. The hikers you’re bound to see along the main cobbled street of rue de la Citadelle are, in fact, continuing an age-old tradition. For centuries, this town has been the last stop in France for pilgrims heading south over the Spanish border, a mere 8km away, and on to Santiago de Compostela in western Spain.

Baigorri

The village of St-Étienne de Baïgorry and its outlying hamlets straddle the idyllic Vallée de Baïgorry. This superbly picturesque village stretches along a branch of the River Nive, and like so many Basque settlements, the village has two focal points: its unique church and the pelota court.

Espelette

Perhaps the most charming Basque village on the French side, Espelette is a warren of postcard-perfect streets lined with idiosyncratic boutiques and traditional white and red half-timbered houses. What really sets it apart, however, is its famous hot pepper, a staple ingredient in traditional Basque cuisine.

Sare & Ainhoa

Sare can trumpet its inclusion on the official list of the most beautiful villages in France and its eye-pleasing array of timbered residences, standing proudly since the 16th century, are all the evidence it needs to justify its inclusion. While Ainhoa is a photographer’s dream, a pretty Basque village par excellence.
